Facebook, YouTube and even texting will be the salvation of many of the world's endangered languages, scientists believe. Of the 7,000 or so languages spoken on Earth today, about half are expected to be extinct by the century's end. Globalisation is usually blamed, but some elements of the "modern world", especially digital technology, are pushing back against the tide.
Twenty-year-old Alex Rawlings has won a national competition to find the UK's most multi-lingual student. The Oxford University undergraduate can currently speak 11 languages - English, Greek, German, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, Afrikaans, French, Hebrew, Catalan and Italian. Entrants in the competition had to be aged between 16 and 22 and conversant in multiple languages.

Fluency in reading, I had always thought, was about meaning, about understanding. It had nothing to do with nonsense. But children are tested regularly in 60-second bursts on meaningless letter combinations — often pushed to go faster than one per.
World stock markets rose to their highest level since the summer on Friday, on hopes that a much-anticipated Greek debt deal might finally be about to get off the ground. Female teachers mark male pupils more harshly than they do their female students, research has claimed. Additionally, girls tend to believe male teachers will look upon them more favourably than female teaching staff, but men treat all students the same, regardless of gender. The study, released on Thursday, told 1,200 students in 29 schools to place financial bets on who would give them higher grades: external examiners or their teacher.
