Greece is in the fourth year of recession and in Athens temporary centres have been at full stretch trying to bring some Christmas cheer to the poor and homeless.

Dozen of people came to pick up packaged meals, some taking them home, while others stayed to enjoy the music and a little company.

“Unfortunately we have no economic support so that’s why we come here,” said Dimitra, who came with her mother, and eventually took to the stage for some traditional Greek dances.

“We’re trying as a municipality to keep this city going. despite the economic crisis we did our duty and managed to offer a free meal to the city’s homeless and to those who are experiencing difficulties,” said the vice-mayor of Athens Nikos Kokkinos.

Many recently unemployed were too ashamed to be filmed, with one man admitting his family thought he was dining at his house with friends.
