Language Teaching Materials

This course provides an introduction to all the essentials you need to know in order to select appropriate materials for your students. The course consists of four ninety-minute sessions.
  • ·Session one covers the evaluation of published materials.

  • ·Session two covers the adaptation of published materials.

  • ·Session three covers the use of resource books and language games.

  • ·Session four covers the use of authentic materials

Aims and objectives

This course aims to provide a sound knowledge of the issues involved in evaluating the suitability of coursebooks, and ways of adapting them to meet learner needs more effectively.

On completion of the course, participants should have a good knowledge of techniques for adapting published materials in line with student needs and interests and the use of additional resources and games to make lessons more engaging. You should also be able to select interesting and appropriate authentic materials as the basis for lessons.

Entry requirements & Assessment

This course is open to all and assumes no prior knowledge of the subject. There is no assessment. Certificates of participation are awarded to all participants.

ICT and Language Learning

This course provides an introduction to all the essentials you need to know in order to start using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in your teaching. The course consists of eight 90-minute sessions over two days

Day 1 – morning: Introduction to Computer-Aided Language Learning

Introduction to key concepts

The role of CALL in relation to Second Language Acquisition and Communicative Language Teaching

ICT essentials (programs, file formats, file management, word processing, working with audio and video)

Day 1 – afternoon: Using the internet in the EFL classroom

Advanced search

Evaluating websites

Demonstration of key websites for language teachers (forums, web publishing on TEFL, resources of authentic and accessible texts for language learning, activities with internet use, webquests)

How to use the Internet to create your own teaching material (webtexts, graphics and images for PowerPoint presentations and interactive whiteboards)

How to access ready TEFL material online (activities and ideas)

Web 2.0 – The integration of social networking websites, blogs etc into the language classroom



Day 2 – morning: PowerPoint and Text Tools for EFL Teachers

Examples of good practice for using PowerPoint in the EFL classroom; features and techniques that can aid a language teacher

Text tools for language teachers; how to access ready-made MS word templates for EFL exercises

How to generate electronic worksheets; how to create your own matching, cloze and gap-filling exercises

Day 2 – afternoon: Authoring CALL Materials and using them on an Interactive Whiteboard

Brief introduction to class management systems (Moodle, WebCT)

How to author your own course content with a learning management authoring tool

How to use interactive whiteboards effectively in an EFL classroom

Aims and objectives

This course aims to provide a basic practical introduction to a wide range of technologies, and give you the hands-on practice needed to enable you to use them effectively in your teaching.

On completion of the course, participants should have the ability to use ICT confidently in teaching.

This course aims to provide a basic introduction to the teaching of the four skills.

On completion of the course, participants should have a basic awareness of issues relating to the teaching of each of the four skills, and the ability to implement a communicative approach to their teaching.

Phonology and Teaching Pronunciation

This course provides an introduction to all the essentials you need to know in order to start teaching pronunciation. The course consists of four ninety-minute sessions.
  • · Session one covers all the basics relating to consonants, including voicing, the place and manner of articulation, and the phonemic symbols.

  • · Session two covers the vowels and diphthongs, and includes suggestions for games and activities for learners to work on these.

  • · Session three covers issues relating to connected speech, including stress, intonation, elision, assimilation and linking.

  • · Session four covers a wide variety of creative techniques for teaching pronunciation at different levels.

Aims and objectives

This course aims to provide a sound foundation in the basics of phonology, and an awareness of the issues involved in teaching pronunciation.

On completion of the course, participants should have a good basic awareness of the sounds of English, and the ability to use a variety of appropriate techniques for teaching pronunciation.
