Cambridge ESOL is pleased to announce that Cambridge University Press is making the A1-C2 British and American English Vocabulary Profile available free of charge to teachers and educationalists around the world for a limited amount of time.

English Vocabulary Profile

The English Vocabulary Profile will form an invaluable reference source for anyone involved in syllabus design as well as materials writers, test developers, teachers and teacher trainers. It provides a complete searchable listing of the words and phrases in English that are considered to be within the levels of the Common European Framework (CEF).

Many people will already be familiar with the working title of the project which was the English Profile Wordlists. However, the resource is now much more than a list of words for each CEF level.

The English Vocabulary Profile offers reliable information at word and sense level, based on extensive analysis of word frequency and learner use, using the Cambridge English Corpus (formerly known as the Cambridge International Corpus), the British National Corpus and the Cambridge Learner Corpus, together with other sources, including the Cambridge ESOL vocabulary lists and classroom materials.

There are two versions, one in British and one in American English, both searchable within a single CEF level or across levels. In addition, they have audio pronunciation for all entries and are fully searchable by part of speech, grammar, usage, prefix or suffix and topic.

Please note that the Terms of Use for this resource do not allow other organisations to promote commercial materials as ‘English Profile informed’ without the written permission of the English Profile core network members. To subscribe to the English Vocabulary Profile, please click here.

We hope that you enjoy using this fantastic resource. Please feel free to ask questions or send us your feedback by contacting us, or clicking on the feedback button within the resource.
